Google to launch Android SDK for wearables

While Google is rumored
 to have its own Nexus-branded smartwatch on the way, possibly by the 
time <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/google-to-launch-android-sdk-for.html" target="_blank">Google</a> I/O kicks off in June (if not earlier), the SDK is designed 
for use with other <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/google-to-launch-android-sdk-for.html" target="_blank">smartwatch </a>makers using the wearable focused Android 
OS.<br />

Using an Android powered smart jacket as an example, Pichai also said 
at <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/google-to-launch-android-sdk-for.html" target="_blank">SXSW</a> that its wearable Android <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/google-to-launch-android-sdk-for.html" target="_blank">SDK</a> is not just for smartwatches but 
for wearables of all sorts. He said the company is releasing the 
developer kit well ahead of hardware release dates in order for Google 
to fine tune the system. Many have suggested this could be as much for 
developers of other wearable devices at it is a beta run for Google's 
own smartwatch technology.<br />

Beyond that, Pichai also mentioned some interesting <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/google-to-launch-android-sdk-for.html" target="_blank">developments</a> that could be on the horizon for the recently acquired Nest Labs.
 Google is is thinking about some kind software "mesh layer" over the 
existing system that will better allow its various devices to 
communicate with one another.

7 smartphone rumored to have a 50-megapixel camera

The rumor stems from the EXIF data of a super high-resolution (8160x6120) photo uploaded on <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/7-smartphone-rumored-to-have-50.html" target="_blank">Weibo</a><a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/7-smartphone-rumored-to-have-50.html" target="_blank">,</a>
 which mentions Oppo Find 7 as the camera name. While it's kind of hard 
to judge camera quality by a single shot, the image itself looks 
impressive (the image above this story is a cropped version).<br />

At present, Nokia and Sony provide smartphones with very high 
resolution cameras. Should the rumor be true, it would put this Android 
powered smartphone ahead of Nokia Lumia 1020, the current leader when it
 comes to megapixel packed in a smartphone, which houses a 41MP camera.<br />

Although the Chinese OEM has reportedly faked leaks in the past to 
generate buzz for its upcoming launches, we'll know for sure later this 
month. The Oppo Find 7 is set for an official launch in Beijing on March
 19th.

Android beats iOS to become the top os for tablets

Compared with the year 2012, when 53.3 million Android tablets were 
sold, 2013 witnessed a whopping 127 percent surge in worldwide sales of 
Android tablets. Over the same period, iPad sales grew to 70.4 million 
from 61.4 million.<br />

The dramatic boost in sales from several different<a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/googles-android-has-effectively.html" target="_blank"> manufacturers</a> had 
Android gaining the largest share in the tablet market. While Android's 
market share grew from 45.8 percent in 2012 to 61.9 percent in 2013, 
iOS's market share dropped from 52.8 percent to 36 <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/googles-android-has-effectively.html" target="_blank">percent </a>during the 
same period.<br />

Increased demand for low-cost tablets from <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/googles-android-has-effectively.html" target="_blank">off-brand</a> manufacturers 
especially in the emerging markets had a negative effect on Apple's 
market share. While overall tablet sales grew by 145 percent in emerging
 countries, the figure stood still at 31 percent in mature markets.<br />

The <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/googles-android-has-effectively.html" target="_blank">iPad</a> remains the most sought after tablet nonetheless and with that
 Apple retained its spot as the <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/googles-android-has-effectively.html" target="_blank">top tablet</a> maker, followed by Samsung, 
which reported 37.4 million in sales, and had a market share of 19.1 
percent. The South Korean company showed a <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/googles-android-has-effectively.html" target="_blank">phenomenal</a> growth last year 
compared with 2012, when it sold just 8.5 million tablets.<br />

Karbonn's new smartphone with Android and WP OS

You may recall that <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/karbonns-new-smartphone-with-android_4.html" target="_blank">Karbonn </a>is one of the new Windows Phone partners that Microsoft announced
 at the start of <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/karbonns-new-smartphone-with-android_4.html" target="_blank">MWC</a> 2014. Thanks to eased regulations on Windows Phone 
hardware, <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/karbonns-new-smartphone-with-android_4.html" target="_blank">Karbonn</a> has been able to develop a dual-booting phone set for 
release in June, along with a few other Windows Phones that we'll see in
 a few month's time.<br />

The company's dual-booting handset is supposed to target "office-going 
professionals and 'techies'", although no <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/karbonns-new-smartphone-with-android_4.html" target="_blank">specifcations </a>nor a price for 
the smartphone has been revealed.<a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/karbonns-new-smartphone-with-android_4.html" target="_blank"> Karbonn</a> devices are typically found 
across Asia were competition is fierce, so it's unlikely the handset 
will be high-end or expensive.<br />

Most devices that run more than one operating system aren't 
particularly successful, as two separate environments can be tricky to 
manage and unfriendly to use. How <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/karbonns-new-smartphone-with-android_4.html" target="_blank">Karbonn's </a>Android and Windows Phone 
smartphone will turn out remains to be seen, but at least it's doing 
something people haven't tried before.

 Q4 2013 numbers saw the two dominate platforms increase even further to
 account for 95.7% off all <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/android-and-ios-made-up-for-957-of.html" target="_blank">smartphones</a> shipped, 4 percentage points 
higher than the same time the previous year.<br />
As we previously saw when <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/android-and-ios-made-up-for-957-of.html" target="_blank">IDC </a>reported that smartphone shipments hit the 1 billion mark, Samsung dominated shipments followed by <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/android-and-ios-made-up-for-957-of.html" target="_blank">Motorola</a> and <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/android-and-ios-made-up-for-957-of.html" target="_blank">Huawei</a> once again pushing Android shipment growth well ahead of iOS.<br />

Although<a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/android-and-ios-made-up-for-957-of.html" target="_blank"> Apple's </a>mobile platform continued its positive trend, it 
experienced the lowest shipment growth at 6.7% for the quarter and 12.9%
 for the year. Due in large part to Nokia, Windows Phone on the other 
hand posted the largest shipment increases, 46.7% on the quarter and 
90.9% for the year. As you might have imagined, <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/android-and-ios-made-up-for-957-of.html" target="_blank">BlackBerry</a> continued its
 downward spiral dipping -40.9 percentage points over the year.<br />
In its latest report,<a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/android-and-ios-made-up-for-957-of.html" target="_blank"> IDC</a> also says the era of double digit yearly 
growth is<a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/android-and-ios-made-up-for-957-of.html" target="_blank"> likely </a>to end overall and that these kinds of numbers only 
have a few years left. While marketing campaigns continue to be focused 
on flagship devices, the group's<a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/03/android-and-ios-made-up-for-957-of.html" target="_blank"> research</a> shows that consumer interest 
is rapidly shifting towards lower cost devices.

Last year <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/02/samsung-waiting-for-android-64-bit.html" target="_blank">Apple</a> had launched a 64-bit mobile processor,
 the first of its kind in the mobile industry. Since then, a number of 
other chip makers have put their 64-bit ambitions into overdrive to keep
 pace including Samsung.<br />

The Korean tech giant expects to join the 64-bit race later this year. During a recent <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">chat</a>
 with CNET at <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/02/samsung-waiting-for-android-64-bit.html" target="_blank">Mobile</a> World Congress, Kyushik Hong, vice president of 
marketing for Samsung's system LSI business, said 64-bit was very 
important in the sense that there is a real demand regardless of whether
 or not it is needed.<br />
<br />

As such,<a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/02/samsung-waiting-for-android-64-bit.html" target="_blank"> Samsung </a>is actively working on it and their chip will be ready
 whenever the operating systems and ecosystem (Android) moves to 64-bit.
 Apple enjoys an advantage in this area as they control both the 
operating system and the design of their processors. Crafting the 
hardware and software under the same roof means they don’t have to wait 
on one side to “catch up” to the other.<br />

Apple and Samsung aren’t the only ones invested in 64-bit. Late last 
year, Qualcomm moved to 64-bit with the announcement of the mid-range <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/02/samsung-waiting-for-android-64-bit.html" target="_blank">Snapdragon</a> 401 SoC and earlier this week, the company revealed two more 64-bit chips: the <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/02/samsung-waiting-for-android-64-bit.html" target="_blank">Snapdragon </a>610 and 615. Intel also showed its hand at Mobile World Congress earlier this week with the<a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/02/samsung-waiting-for-android-64-bit.html" target="_blank"> Merrifield</a> and Moorefield mobile chip lineup while Nvidia did the same at last month's CES with its Tegra K1 SoC.<br />

With plenty of hardware in the works, it’s now up to <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/02/samsung-waiting-for-android-64-bit.html" target="_blank">Google</a> to come up with a 64-bit version of Android.

When it comes to 8-inch Windows tablets, the release of Windows 8.1 
has seen many companies try their hands at crafting the perfect tablet. 
Acer was first with the mediocre<a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/02/windows-8-toshiba-encore-tablet-review.html" target="_blank"> Iconia W3</a>
 and shortly afterwards a ton of other devices came to the market from 
the likes of Dell, Asus, Lenovo and also Toshiba, whose 'Encore' tablet 
is the focus of today’s review.<br />
<br />
Like a lot of small Windows tablets in the same price bracket as the 
Encore, specifications aren’t stellar especially in the display 
department: we’re looking at a 1280 x 800 panel, a resolution which 
Windows device manufacturers seem to love. There’s also the popular 
Intel Atom Z3740 SoC inside, as well as an 8-megapixel camera and 19.5 
Wh battery, which makes its hardware package overall a little different 
to the Lenovo Miix 2 8, which we're also in the process of reviewing.<br />

Most eight inch tablets feature some form of the standard, 
slightly-rounded rectangular prism design. The Toshiba Encore is no 
exception, although its take on the slate design is rather uninspiring.<br />
 The Encore is a fairly chubby device, making no attempt to match the 
svelte nature of some of its competitors. Its 10.7mm thick and 445 grams
 heavy profile compares unfavorably to the Lenovo Miix 2 8 (at 350g and 
8.35mm thick) and to the highly popular Apple iPad mini Retina 
(308g/7.5mm). The size doesn't just look bad on paper, the Encore feels 
portly in your hands and the design doesn’t try to hide it.<br />

<span style="color: blue;">Display</span></h2>
Toshiba has gone for an 8.0-inch TFT HFFS LED-backlit LCD panel in 
the Encore, with a resolution of 1280 x 800. HFFS, which stands for 
high-transmittance fringe field switching, is an alternate display 
technology to IPS that offers less color shifting and similar viewing 
angles. It’s not a display type we often see, but Toshiba might have 
chosen it to keep manufacturing costs down.<br />
One area the Encore’s display really excels is viewing angles. Like an 
IPS panel, the Encore’s LCD is viewable at nearly all angles, however 
there is noticeably less color shifting and distortion. This is actually
 surprising considering there is a decent gap between the protective 
glass and panel itself, which in TN panels would significantly affect 
viewing angles.<br />

<span style="color: blue;">Performance: Intel Bay Trail Atom Z3740</span></h2>
Inside the Toshiba Encore is Intel’s ‘Bay Trail’ Atom Z3740 SoC, a 
very popular choice among manufacturers building mid-range and 
entry-level Windows tablets. The very same SoC is seen in the <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/02/windows-8-toshiba-encore-tablet-review.html" target="_blank">Asus Transformer Book T100</a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/null"> </a>and Lenovo Miix 2 8, so the performance from the Encore should largely be the same as these devices.<br />

CPU-wise we’re looking at four 1.33 GHz ‘Silvermont’ cores, with a 
Turbo Boost of 1.86 GHz when higher single-thread performance is needed.
 There’s an Intel Gen 7 HD Graphics GPU clocked at 667 MHz, plus a 
dual-channel LPDDR3 controller that’s paired with 2 GB of 1067 MHz RAM. 
Bluetooth 4.0 and dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n make up the tablet’s 
connectivity; there’s no LTE/HSPA+ model available, which some users 
will find disappointing.<br />

<span style="color: blue;">Camera</span></h2>
On the back of the Toshiba Encore we find a Sony IMX175 1/3.2” CMOS 
sensor with a resolution of 8-megapixels and an individual pixel size of
 1.4 µm, paired with an f/2.2 lens. Interestingly this is the same 
sensor as found on some variants of the <a href="http://askneed.blogspot.com/2014/02/windows-8-toshiba-encore-tablet-review.html" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S III</a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/null">,</a>
 which at the time had a pretty great camera. On the front we’re looking
 at an Omnivision OV2722 2-megapixel 1/6” sensor, again with 1.4 µm 
pixels. Both cameras are capable of 1080p30 video recording.<br />

<span style="color: blue;">Battery Life, Wrap Up</span></h2>
</div>
The Toshiba Encore packs a sizable 19.5 watt-hour battery, which 
should be more than enough to see it through a regular day’s worth of 
usage. Unlike smartphones, the battery life of a tablet is rarely a 
concern, although it’s never a bad thing to see a device strive to last 
the longest in all conditions.<br />

That said, the Encore’s battery life doesn’t seem to hold as long as 
some of the other tablets I’ve tested recently, despite featuring 
similar internals. This could be due to the HFFS panel, which is a type 
of display seldom used on tablets, but other software and hardware 
choices may also be contributing factors. <br />
